Portable Paint Palette

THE PALETTE

In further exploring the application of the boxed water carton in art/studio environments, the concept for a paint palette emerged. The treatment and coating of the cartons make them ideal for such a purpose. I agreed to oversee the construction and form of this concept. While determining the limits for potential use I realized thatI could introduce a second degree of functionality. With the additional effort of cutting out a template that is printed on the inside of the carton the palette becomes an easily sealed and thus portable product for the student on the go.

Wall Tapestry

Due to the environment's precarious state, many people have realized that they have to do all they can to conserve/recycle/reuse. Upcycling is an alternative that people can do to help the environment and as well as be creative. By upcycling, it changes the way people view "what is disposable" and alters the way we look at everyday objects which would usually be thrown away and find an alternate way to reuse them.
Since the "Boxed Water is Better" carton is a very simple shape with a repetitive pattern, that gives the consumer a lot of room for creativity. By collecting several cartons and creating simple geometric shapes, one has numerous options to create interesting decorative pieces such as the wall tapestry.
There are many examples of upcycling in the internet. One interesting example is from the Unplug Design Studio in Seoul who created soccer balls from recycled famine relief packages. This "Dream Ball" as it is called can be made into different sizes by perforating the cardboard and weaving the pieces together.
Another example can be found in the Museum of Contemporary Craft where the artist Jason Rogenes created something similar to the "Boxed Water tapestry". He collected several polystyrene pieces (which are usually used to protect electronics) and joined them creating interesting shapes which he later hung on wall and lit up with lamps inside. Like the wall tapestry created, Rogenes piece can be endlessly expanding, composed of individual smaller solids. With his piece, he saves polystyrene and also educates the viewer on looking carefully at the possibilities to be creative everyday with "everyday objects".

Baseball Cap Proposal

Given the upper-scale locations where “Boxed Water is Better” can be found, the upcycling of a children’s baseball cap would benefit not only the company but the consumer as well. Forming a baseball cap from the package of “Boxed Water is Better” would serve to prevent the package from turning into waste. At the same time, reusing the package for arts and crafts projects for children create mental stimulation and a social activity. Becoming a piece of wearable art means that the package will not pollute the environment after consumption and as much of the total carton will be reused. The hat template would be printed on the inside of the carton and takes more material than each carton offers, so a series of three boxes would be needed.

Clutch Bag Proposal

In the process of converting the Boxed Water carton into a new object, the concept of a clutch bag emerged. The clutch would target women, as well as anyone that is interested in fashion, such as designers and boutiques. I wanted to create a useful object; its material makes it very light and waterproof, and the size is ideal to contain anything from change and car keys to a wallet or passport. The clutch is designed to be worn under the arm or carried in hands. It can also be worn as a wristlet if desired. It is possible to add as many pocket as wanted.

TerraCycle has been my main inspiration, by turning chips bags into tote bags. The simple graphics and silver color inside the box create a simple yet sophisticated design.

Creativity is the backbone of the Green Movement. What better way to
help this process than to use that same technology to help artists
propel themselves towards new paths of discovery. With the help of
"Boxed Water is Better" and a team of highly trained designers
(Team Osmose) we have sought to do just that. By creating a set
of tools to help painters using empty "Boxed Water is Better"
packages, we have successfully fine tuned their creative process while
simultaneously helping the environment. Each team member
contibuted to a series of three cohesive but seperate solutions. This
portion of the solution is a compartment for specialty paints
that have been mixed and may be needed at a later date. The artist
mixes their paint and then stores them in the capsules that are
attached. Each cap has a lid that screws on to keep the paint wet.

Valentina-Clutch Bag

I changed my project to a clutch bag. I kept the idea of creating something useful and wearable. The clutch is made of two pockets. The size is ideal can carry anything from car keys to a wallet. I thought the silver color and simple graphics combined together create a simple and sophisticated design that can be worn with anything.

Aaron- Hat

I am having trouble with the proportions of the hat. As of right now my hat will fit almost any small animal from a hamster to a lizard. Will have to specially design a hat template for myself, Standard templates will not fit with the current size of the water (milk) carton.


Deborah- Wall Tapestry

I going to make the tapestry out of bristol and spray paint the inside part of it. I am attempting to make it three dimensional using different folds to create interesting patterns throughout the piece.

Fernando- Paint Palette

Valentina- Apron

I am creating an artist apron, with art students in mind. The apron would be ideal because it wouldn't need to be washed, it is easy to assemble, and contains pockets for paint brushes and other tools.

Monday 11/22

In our last session we struggled with the question of functionality vs. aesthetics.

We haven't really reached a conclusion on that matter.

Our considerations thus far have mostly broken down the structure of the object as opposed to added to it.

Through our discussion we decided that we wanted to orchestrate a collective idea within the same focus. Following the paint palette concept, we felt we could further explore the artist as a potential consumer market.

The form of this boxed water exemplifies the idea of a blank canvas and practically asks for colors to be applied.

Our team has considered the product Boxed Water is Better™ and it's potential for upcycling. Aspects for usability include it's properties for insulation for water and temperature, and use as modular components. Early brainstorming ideas include;
